WEIGHTLIFTING

OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING

Olympic weightlifting is a challenging and exciting sport that involves lifting heavy barbells in specific ways using a combination of strength, speed, and precision. Using two main techniques: the snatch and the clean and jerk, the goal is to lift the barbell from the ground to overhead in a smooth motion, following strict rules.

Olympic weightlifting is cool because it's not just about being strong – it's about being fast and skilful too. Lifters need to be strong enough to lift heavy weights and fast enough to move the barbell quickly. It's like a mix of power and grace. Weightlifting has been part of the modern Olympic Games for a long time.

SNATCH

In the snatch, using a wide grip on the bar the lifter lifts the barbell from the ground to an overhead position in one smooth, continuous motion.

The lifter must lift the barbell overhead with locked arms and then stand up straight to complete the lift. The snatch emphasises speed, explosiveness, and precision in executing the lift.

CLEAN AND JERK

The clean and jerk has two parts.

First, the lifter lifts the barbell from the ground to their shoulders – this is the clean. Then, they lift it from their shoulders to overhead – this is the jerk.

The jerk involves a powerful push with the legs and sometimes a split or squat under the barbell. Again, the lifter needs to stand up straight to finish the lift.
